"Blue's Big Costume Party" Season 3 Episode 21

In Gatsby there are the parties in the first three chapters. The first party is Daisy's dinner party in chapter one. It takes place in East Egg which is more fashionable then the West at the Buchanan house. In the book it is described as, "... a cheerful red-and-white Georgian Colonial mansion...". The colors and the structure of the house symbolize power, wealth, purity and how it is meant to stick out. The people at the party were Nick, Daisy, Tom and Jordan. Tom is described as, “Now he was a sturdy straw-haired man of thirty with a rather hard mouth and a supercilious manner. Two shining arrogant eyes had established dominance over his face and gave him the appearance of always leaning aggressively forward.” While the dinner party carried on Tom kept showing his dominance and was aggressive with his actions. Jordan is described as, “She was a slender, small-breasted girl, with an erect carriage, which she accentuated by throwing her body backward at the shoulders like a young cadet. Her gray sun-strained eyes looked back at me with polite reciprocal curiosity out of a wan, charming, discontented face.” When Nick showed up to the house she didn't give much care to his presence and carried those actions throughout the party. Daisy is described as, “Her face was sad and lovely with bright things in it, bright eyes and a bright passionate mouth, but there was an excitement in her voice that men who had cared for her found difficult to forget…”. Daisy was sarcastic and didn't do much when Tom would be aggressive towards her. The dinner had a lot of tension between Daisy and Tom. As Jordan would fill Nick in on Tom's affair Daisy wouldn't do or say anything as Tom goes off to take a phone call from his other girl.

The second party is Myrtle's apartment gathering in chapter two. It takes place in an apartment in New York. In the chapter it is described as, "... a small living-room, a small dining-room, a small bedroom and a bath. The living-room was crowded to the doors set with a set of tape-tried furniture...The only picture was an over-enlarged photograph...". The people at the apartment are Nick, Tom, Myrtle, Catherine, and Mr. and Mrs. Mckee. Catherine is described as, "The sister...was a slender, wordly girl of about thirty, with a solid, sticky bob of red hair, and a complexion powdered milky white." During the party Catherine was explaining to Nick about the relationship between Tom and Myrtle. Mr. Mckee is described as, "... pale, feminine man from the flat below." Mrs. Mckee is described as, "...shrill, languid, handsome and horrible." Mr. and Mrs. Mckee would talk about Mr. Mckee's photography job and all the things they could photograph. Myrtle is described as, "She was in the middle thirties, and faintly stout, but she carried her surplus flesh sensuously as some women can." Throughout the party Myrtle was serving her guests until she got into a fight with Tom. Tom's actions during the party were very aggressive and abusive as he punched Myrtle in the face. The other ladies at the party then scolded him.

The third party is Gatsby's in chapter three. It takes place at the West Egg as Gatsby's mansion. In chapter one Gatsby's house is described as, "... it was a factual imitation of some Hôtel de Ville in Normandy, with a tower on one side, spanking new under a thin beard of raw ivy, and a marble swimming-pool, and more than forty acres of lawn and garden” Gatsby's mansion represents the want for attention but it isn't original. Many people were at Gatsby's party but the man people were Nick, Jordan, and Gatsby. In chapter one Gatsby is described as, “If personality is an unbroken series of successful gestures, then there was something gorgeous about him, some heightened sensitivity to the promises of life…”. Jordan and Nick stuck with each other throughout the party and talked about rumors with others. Gatsby wasn't very involved in his own party and many times were interrupted by a phone when he was conversing with his guests.

If I had to attend one of these parties I would attend Myrtles in New York. I would attend this party instead of the other ones because it has more action. Daisy's party was full of tension and it would be awkward to sit and see Tom and Daisy "fight". Although Gatsby's party would be fun it is too big and fancy. I would end up sitting in the library all night because I don't like to socialize with other people. Myrtles would be the party I attend mostly because there is a dog present. While others are talking I would be playing with the dog and watching the show.
