"The Fairy Tale Ball" Season 6 Episode 9

The epigraph found on the title page applies to Gatsby in many ways. The epigraph is generally about the idea of having to be wealthy and be extravagant to stand out to someone you are interested in. Gatsby fits into this meaning as he tries to impress or catch Daisy's attention.

In chapter four Gatsby lists out accomplices of his to Nick as they drove to New York to eat lunch. On page 66 one accomplishment he lists is, "'He reached in his pocket, and a piece of metal, slung on a ribbon, fell into my palm." The metal was Gatsby's award for being promoted a major in Montenegro's and named, 'Valour Extraordinary'.  Gatsby also mentioned his wealth and education at Oxford. Although this doesn't directly correlate with Daisy however, Nick is Daisy's cousin. For Gatsby to be on the good side of Nick would help him get the attention of Daisy. Which brings me to the end of chapter four where Gatsby creates a plan to see Daisy. On page 78 it says, "'He wants to know,' continued Jordan, 'if you'll invite Daisy to your house some afternoon and then let him come over.'" Now that Nick knows more about Gatsby there is a better chance of him agreeing however he still questions why he has to set it up. Gatsby didn't ask Daisy or Nick because he felt like "'He's waited so long.'" He also didn't ask Jordan because Gatsby wants to show Daisy his wealth and stick out. On page 79 Jordan says, "'He wants her to see his house,' she explained." When Daisy sees Gatsby's mansion it will show her that he has money.

In chapter five Nick agrees to Gatsby's plan and Gatsby and Daisy reunite. After having tea Daisy admires Gatsby's house just like he wanted. On page 90 it says, "With enchanting murmurs Daisy admired this aspect or that of the feudal silhouette against the sky, admired the gardens, the sparkling order of jonquils...". Daisy also mentions how living in such a big house would be lonely but Gatsby explained how he has parties all day filled with interesting people. By saying this he is trying to impress her with the thought that he is always around important people having fun. Gatsby even shows Daisy some shirts that truly impressed her. On page 92 Daisy says, "'They're such beautiful shirts,' she sobbed, her voice muffled in the thick folds. 'It makes me sad because I've never seen such-such beautiful shirts before.'" Daisy is so impressed to the point she cries. Tom's shirts don't compare to the shirts Gatsby has.

In chapter six it talks about Gatsby's background of being lower class and how he worked hard to achieve his dream of wealth and luxury. On page 100-101 it says, "He was left with his singularly appropriate education; the vague contour of Jay Gatsby had filled out to the substantiality of a man." This line of how Nick was describing Gatsby shows how even though he didn't have much he still turned out to achieve his dream. However, this dream of wealth and luxury includes his relationship with Daisy. Gatsby wants to believe that Daisy is the girl that loved him before he left for war but she wouldn't go back to Gatsby as to her it would be out of place. As Gatsby is trying to win Daisy back by showing her his wealth and trying to "bounce high" it will never work out in the end. On page 110 Nick starts off by saying, "'I wouldn't ask too much of her,' I ventured. 'You can't repeat the past.'" On the same page Gatsby replies with, "'Can't repeat the past?' he cried incredulously. 'Why of course you can!'" Gatsby is stuck in this dream as if Daisy and him were five years back in time.

Throughout these three chapters we see how Gatsby tries to impress or win back Daisy but showing his wealth and planning the parties with interesting people. Gatsby has done everything to try to gain Daisy's attention. He even made sure his house was in eyes view of hers. However, Gatsby might never achieve this dream of his.
